“Therefore He is able also to save forever those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.” Hebrews 7:25 ( NASB )
Oh that we would see the ongoing, never ending work of the Savior, making intercession for us before the Father! We strive in our limited understanding to look back through the annuls of history, come to the cross and cast upon it our sin, to leave upon the Savior the iniquity of our fleshy souls that we may somehow in the Son of God’s work therein be forgiven and free. What we do not go on to grasp is the power of the resurrection toward us to bring upon us new life now and new life eternally, made possible because it is the resurrected and ascended, ever able Jesus Christ that lives to make intercession for us!
We go often in our minds to the Jesus Christ feeding 5,000 and ask that we may sit and share in that meal, or we go to the Jesus Christ healing the blind beggar to receive sight of our own. Perhaps you go to the Jesus stretching out His hand to touch the leper that you too may be made whole and clean, but friend, all of these are the works which did tell us the identity of the man to be crucified and risen, but there is a greater and more glorious Jesus Christ still revealed in the Word!
Therefore, cast your gaze upward, to a risen and living Christ that cares for your soul at this very hour, to a Christ that is able to save you forever because death has been done away from Him eternally, because the grave cannot touch Him any longer, because the flesh has not nor ever will consume Him, because sin has been cancelled through Him without measure, because He told us that He was the way to the Father, and after paying your debt,He went. He travelled that unseen road upward and ahead of us, to fulfill the new and living way, so that all may now indeed receive the things He promised. Did He not say, “…it is better for you that I leave?”
And now the Christ we read of in the Scriptures would point us to the Christ we read of in the letters to the church, the letters to you! He is that Christ that is beside the Father right now, making intercession for you always. What a glorious and encouraging thought, that we need not desperately search backward to find a mysteriously hidden Christ Jesus to help us, but that we may look upward now, upon His dear face, seeing Him in the moment you find yourself today, alive and well, active and caring, fulfilling daily His promises toward us to never leave us or forsake us, a faithful friend. He is today beseeching the Almighty Father on behalf of all who have believed upon Him for access to the throne of grace now and eternal life with Him forever, and unceasingly is “able also to save.” How is it that we are able to now live the Christ-like life today? Because the Christ of God is at work today within you, before you, behind you, beneath you, beside you, above you, ahead of you and through you!
We have so very much to thank Him for that He has done, but we also have very much to lift our hands in thanks for right now, in this present moment, where the Son of God resides very near you, having brought you close where you could not travel on your own, where the Father and the Son look on you with love. Thank Him right now, that He IS caring for you!
