The story of how I fell in love with Sierra Leone starts with my call to missions when I was 17 years old and was at a conference where the speaker told everyone to close their eyes and raise their hands if they felt called to reach the unreached people of the world. Misunderstanding what the speaker said, I accidentally raised my hand, but knowing God, that was no accident. Two years passed in which I was going to college with no real direction. However, in 2013 I went on a two month mission trip to Kenya, Africa where I served at an orphanage. While there I felt the inexplicable peace and joy that can only be found in God and being where He’s called you to serve. Through my trip to Kenya, God gave me direction in my schooling and when I came home I started studying for my Bachelor’s in Social Work. I graduated in December of 2015. A year passed and I was searching for what God wanted my next step to be. In February of 2017, God took me on my first journey to Sierra Leone, Africa, where I found that peace and joy again. God showed me my earthly home and that is in Sierra Leone. I fell in love with the children, the teenagers, the parents, the grandparents and the country of SL. My greatest desire is to grow God’s kingdom and to share His name with all the people I encounter, both in the states and in SL. In June of 2018, I will be heading back to Sierra Leone to work with orphans at Grace Village where I will get to share God’s story with them. So raising my hand back at the conference when I was 17, was not an accident, it was God foreshadowing His plan for me to be on the mission field in Sierra Leone.
